INCULCATING EQUALITY AMONG CHILDREN

Equality among children ! How many times have you heard these phrases-‘Don’t cry like a girl!’ ,‘Don’t sit like a boy!’ ‘ What will people say?’ All of us would have heard these phrases countless times from our parents, relatives and society. Sadly, we can even hear children making such statements .

Equality among children 

As children, we would have felt the absurdity of such phrases but eventually, they would have been justified in our minds. Then, we ourselves would have imposed such practices on our close ones and thus, the cycle keeps continuing. This cycle must be broken and the best time to start the process of breaking it is childhood. The roots of gender discrimination and prejudice should be cut and new seeds of equality and unity should be sown in young minds.

This is a tricky task as the creeping- in of gender stereotypes is subtle but is possible and most importantly, starts with parents. Parents themselves should first realize the concept of ‘actual’ feminism and preach it to their children. They may not understand every word but they will be able to learn a lot from actions and behaviour.

Being unbiased and impartial to the brother- sister duos at home and politely teaching children where they should practice gender discrimination can go a long way in making a difference. Teachers also play a role in shaping the mindset of children. Correcting students in the classrooms and conducting interactive awareness sessions can help a lot in bringing the Equality among children. 

All are equal and special

By understanding and taking action, we step closer to a future where society does not taunt or judge girls, boys or men and women for being themselves. We are all equal and special – we all have the same origin and yet are totally different!

Children are the future and it is our responsibility to make the future generation realize this ideology of EQUALITY. Let us join hands and build a beautiful world!
