According to ancient Indian philosophy, chakras are the energy centers in the body. They are the focal points where spiritual energies intersect and influence physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The word “chakra” means “wheel” or “disk” in Sanskrit. There are seven main chakras, each of which is associated with a specific colour, emotions and organs. Among the seven chakras, the Crown chakra and Root chakra symbolize the beginning and end.
Crown chakra:
It is located at the top of the head and is associated with spiritual awareness, enlightenment and connection to the divine. This chakra governs our sense of universal consciousness. A feeling of empathy and compassion is established when this chakra is balanced, while, one may experience lack of purpose and hopelessness if it is unbalanced. Chanting the mantra “AUM” enhances the chakra’s power.
Root chakra:

This chakra controls our sense of safety and survival. A feeling of stability and confidence is established when the root chakra is balanced. If this chakra is imbalanced, one may experience fear, anxiety and insecurity. Chanting the mantra “LAM” magnifies this chakra’s power.
Opening the chakras in the body
Various practices such as yoga, meditation and breathing exercises are used to balance and open the chakras. Reconnecting with nature, chanting mantras and practicing mudras help activate the chakras.
