Dr.Salim Ali
The name ‘Dr.Salim Ali’, must surely ring a bell with students from Coimbatore, many of whom may have visited the famous Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology located in Anaikatti on the outskirts of the city. Dr. Salim Ali (12 November 1896- 20 June 1987), was a renowned ornithologist and was popularly known as the ‘Bird Man of India’. His path breaking research on birds saw him write several journals and books. One of his most well-known works is the ‘Handbook on the Birds of India and Pakistan’. This genius was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 1958 and 1976 respectively.
Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
This is a name that needs no introduction. The ‘People’s President’ was originally an aerospace scientist. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, (15 October 1931 – 27 July 2015) born in Rameswaram studied physics and aerospace engineering. He would go on to play a key role in the development of the country’s ballistic missile and space research domains later on. He had stints with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), before becoming the 11 th President of India.
G.D.Naidu
Let us talk about someone from our very own Coimbatore. G.D.Naidu, (23 March 1893 – 4 January 1974) is popularly referred to as the ‘Edison of India’. It is hard to believe that this genius whose knowledge spanned automobile, mechanical and electrical engineering, to mention only some, had only primary education. From an internal combustion four stroke engine to a kerosene powered table fan, to super-thin blades, to identification of new varieties of Papaya and Cotton, this versatile genius, was truly one of a kind.
The super scientists of India did incredible things for the development of people in various fields and helped a lot to develop the country.
