Top 10 Scientists of India – Part 2

Top 10 Scientists of India ! The extraordinarily talented individuals, scientists have through their tireless pursuits in their respective fields made us all proud. Let us take a look at some of these internationally acclaimed scientists.

Homi Jehangir Bhabha

India has gained global reputation in the field of space research in recent times. However, do you know who played key role in the birth of the Indian space research programme? Yes, you are right. It was by Homi J. Bhabha (30 October 1909 to 24 January 1966). Not only this, this prominent physicist is also widely regarded as the ‘father of the Indian nuclear programme’ too. He was the founding Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954, he was also the first Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission.

Vikram Sarabhai

A physicist, astronomer, industrialist and visionary, Vikram Sarabhai (12 August 1919 – 30 December 1971), was a multifaceted personality. There are 2 areas that immediately come to mind when this genius’ name is mentioned – space and nuclear research. Not for nothing is he widely regarded as the ‘Father of Indian space program’. He was the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India (1966-71).

Establishment of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was yet another feather in his cap. Vikram Sarabhai also played a key role in putting Aryabhata, the first Indian satellite in space in 1975. He also played a pivotal role in setting up the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad. He was honoured with the Padmabhushan and Padma Vibhushan (posthumously) in 1966 and 1972,
respectively.

Sir Mokhsagundam Visvesvaraya

Sir M.Visvesvaraya has left his indelible mark on the country’s scientific history with his great achievements in the field of civil engineering. He was instrumental in the design of a unique system of water floodgates at Khadakvasla Dam, located near Pune. The same system was later on implemented at Tigra Dam, Gwalior and KRS Dam, Mysore. He was also instrumental in designing a system to safeguard Vishakhapatnam port from sea erosion and also played a key role in designing a flood protection system for Hyderabad. He was honoured with ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1955. He was also an able administrator who served as the Dewan of Mysore (1912-18).

Satyendra Nath Bose

Satyendra Nath Bose (January 1894 – 4 February 1974) is another stalwart Indian mathematician and physicist, who attained global fame. He was a truly versatile genius whose scientific interests spanned across areas such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, mineralogy and biology. Awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1954, he was also known for his love of arts, literature and music. He is noted for his work on quantum mechanics in the 1920s and his collaboration with another genius – Albert Einstein which led to Bose-Einstein statistics and the Bose-Einstein Condensate theory. The above is only a partial list for there are several other scientists with immense contributions in different fields of science, whom we will be covering in our later blogs.

At the school, our teachers adopt a variety of methods like conducting science expo, robotics, techno expo to teach our students about famous scientists from across the world. This kind of holistic education is what makes us a top CBSE school in Coimbatore.
