“Your friend is better than you”. It is very unfair to compare the talent of two human beings, because not all are created equal. Every child has got his/her innate talent that is waiting to make a mark. Looking at the positive side of things is the best way to go.

“You are not good enough (low grades in tests)”. There can be nothing more insulting or hurting to a kid than this one statement. There is nothing good that can be gained through such a statement. Instead, take the positive route. Tell the kid that while this time his grades may be less, if he were to work hard, he can surely make an improvement.

“You are not responsible”. This is again a negative statement. Even if your son or daughter has done something wrong, try to chide them gently. Tell them that not being responsible is just not done. Shouting at the top of your voice is not the way to go.

“You don’t look good”. Never make the mistake of commenting on a child’s appearance. It could lead to low self-esteem.

“You are good for nothing”. Repeatedly comparing or putting down a child can do a lot of harm to a child’s mental health. Instead of scolding a child for a wrong, gently give them a solution, so that they don’t repeat the issue.

“Stop crying”. There are times when children need an emotional outlet. Sensitive children may feel that you don’t value their feelings if you ask them to stop crying.
