It became the official flag once India attained independence from the British rule on 15 th August, 1947.

The Tiranga as it is popularly referred to, consists of three horizontal stripes in three colours – saffron, white and green. While saffron represents courage and sacrifice, white represents peace and truth, while the green band represents faith and chivalry. At the centre of the flag is the ‘Ashoka Chakra’ a 24-spoke wheel. The navy blue Ashoka Chakra is also called the ‘Dharma Chakra’.
