D.R.Karthikeyan, former Director, CBI from Coimbatore. A dynamic personality to admire!!
There are many leading personalities who have selflessly served the country hailing from Coimbatore. As part of our ‘Camford Salutes’ this time we are featuring yet another stalwart from the city, D.R.Karthikeyan, former Director , Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI).
He was born on 2nd October, 1939, in a village called Devarayapuram, in Coimbatore district. Hailing from an agricultural family, Karthikeyan completed his graduation in Chemistry. He then went onto do his post-graduation in Agriculture from the Annamalai University. Subsequently he also went on to do a Bachelor of Law degree from the Madras Law College.
The Eventful Career
Come 1964 Karthikeyan joined the Indian Police Service (IPS). Thus, began an eventful career, which would see him excel in several top positions.
Some of the positions he held include, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Bangalore, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Karnataka State Intelligence Department , Inspector General of Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Southern Sector, Hyderabad, Special Director General, Central Reserve Police Force , Director Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Director General, National Human Rights Commission. His overseas stints include being the First Secretary in the Embassy of India, Moscow, Russia from 1974 to 77 and Embassy of India, Sydney, Australia promoting Indian exports to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
He also headed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that investigated former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case.
