The Gateway to Western Ghats is Coimbatore. It has always been known for its natural settings. From hills on a couple of sides, to several water bodies, and a wide variety of flora and fauna, the district is indeed blessed to be in the midst of such settings. The city is also very well known for its wonderful climate. The cool breeze one can experience here is perhaps one of the best stress busters after a hard day’s work. Whenever talking about natural settings and Coimbatore, how can one forget mentioning the majestic Western Ghats, which flank the city on its western and northern sides?

The Western Ghats running across the western stretch of India have always fascinated people. Coimbatore in a way could be said to be a prominent gateway to the Western Ghats. Views of majestic mountain ranges can be found if one were to drive down places such as the Palghat gap, on Thadagam Road, or towards the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. One can also find forest cover in places such as the foothills of the Nilgiris and the Veliangadu valley. These places are known for its diverse range of animal, bird and plant life.

The region is also known for its water sources. Names such as Siruvani and Noyyal would be known to anyone familiar to Coimbatore. Then there are the equally popular Aliyar and Bhavani rivers, all of which have contributed towards the development of agriculture in the region apart from being sources of drinking water.
